How does botox slim the jawline? The masseter answer, in Cheongdam, Gangnam, Seoul

By reducing the nerve signal to the chewing muscle at the jaw angle, so a muscle that has been overworked contracts less and loses bulk over the following weeks. Width that is bone or skin does not answer to it. Listed from ₩40,000 per session.

The Mechanism

What the toxin does inside a chewing muscle

Botulinum toxin type A interrupts the chemical message that travels from nerve to muscle fibre. Placed inside the masseter, it leaves that muscle contracting with less force every time you chew or clench. A muscle used with less force behaves like any other unworked muscle: it loses bulk gradually, and the outline of the lower face narrows as the bulk goes.

Two details in that sentence carry the whole answer. The first is that the change is subtraction of muscle volume, so it appears at the speed muscle changes, which is weeks and not evenings. The second is that it happens only where the product sits. Toxin placed inside the masseter acts on the fibres it reaches and not on the rest of the face, which is why the mapping of the injection points matters as much as the number of units.

The clinical literature below describes that mechanism for aesthetic use and compares how the licensed type A products differ from each other in the laboratory. It is the mechanism, the dosing logic and the product science that those papers establish; what your own jaw does with a given dose is a question for your own examination.

It is also worth being exact about the word slimming. Chewing muscle is one of four things that make a lower face read wide, and the toxin addresses one of them. The square jaw treatment page carries the full protocol, the dosing approach and the aftercare; this page answers the mechanism question and where it stops.

Who It Reaches

When masseter toxin narrows a jawline and when it cannot

One question settles most of it: does the angle of your jaw harden under a fingertip when you bite down?

IT REACHES

A masseter that stands out when you clench

If a firm block rises at the jaw angle under your fingers as you bite, the width in front of us is muscular, and reducing how hard that muscle works changes the outline it creates. This is the pattern the treatment was designed around.

IT REACHES

Bulk built by grinding and clenching

Night grinding and a clenched jaw through a hard season train the masseter the way any repeated load trains a muscle. Toxin softens what the habit built. The habit itself is untouched, so it is worth addressing alongside the injection.

IT CANNOT

Width that is bone, fat or gland

A wide mandible stays wide, fullness from fat sits in a different layer, and a prominent parotid gland is a specialty placement of its own. We do not recommend a masseter injection for any of the three, and the reading is what tells them apart.

A fourth pattern comes in often enough to name: a lower face that reads heavy because the chin is short while the jaw itself is a normal width. Narrowing a masseter there changes very little, and the conversation turns to projection instead. Being sent to a different consultation is a normal outcome of this diagnosis, and it happens before anything is opened. Where the finding is skin quality along the jawline instead of muscle bulk, the skin botox page and the lifting category describe what does apply.

The Sequence

How a masseter result arrives and why it is temporary

Nothing changes in the mirror on the day. The muscle first works with less force, and only afterwards does the bulk built by that work reduce, so the outline moves slowly. How long the softening holds varies with the dose, with how strong the muscle was, and with your own metabolism; your director gives you the expected pattern for your plan rather than a fixed figure.

A grinding habit is the main reason one person's result holds differently from another's, because the load that built the muscle carries on after the toxin has worn off. Raise it at the consultation if you wake with a tight jaw or a dental guard on your bedside table.

Listed Rates

What jawline slimming with toxin costs per session here

Square jaw treatment is published at ₩40,000 (≈ $30) per session on the Korean tier and ₩350,000 (≈ $250) on the imported one. Both figures cover the chewing muscle on both sides, both are quoted identically to Seoul residents and to visiting patients, and the tier is chosen by you at the consultation with the difference explained.
TierWhat the listed rate coversPer session
KoreanDomestically manufactured botulinum toxin type A, mapped and dosed across both masseters in one sitting₩40,000 (≈ $30)
ImportedAn imported premium-tier type A product, same mapping and the same session, for patients who prefer it₩350,000 (≈ $250)

Korean pharmaceutical advertising rules keep prescription toxin product names off public pages, so tiers appear here instead of manufacturers; your director names the product and shows you the vial before it is drawn. Pricing is per session and not a course, so nothing about a first appointment commits you to a second. Every other published figure sits on the price list.

Limits And Risks

What masseter dosing can get wrong on a jawline

Depth and position inside the muscle decide how the lower face settles. Product laid too superficially over the angle can dimple the skin above it, and an uneven map leaves the two sides softening at different rates, which is the most common thing a review evens up. Bruising at an entry point and brief swelling are the ordinary minor risks; a point that strays toward the muscles of the mouth can change a smile for several weeks until it wears off.

Overshooting in the other direction is a real outcome as well. A masseter reduced further than a face can carry takes support away from the lower cheek, and the answer to that is restraint at the first session instead of repair afterwards. Dosing low, watching the response and adding at review is the order used here for exactly that reason.

Tell your director about a neuromuscular condition, about blood-thinning medication or supplements, and about a pregnancy or breastfeeding, since any of those can change what is offered to you. Results vary between individuals and are assessed on your own examination.

Dear, Knowhow

How the masseter question is settled at Dear

01 — THE FULL ARSENAL

Muscle, gland, fat and outline under one roof

Saying the width is not muscular costs nothing here, because the alternative is on the same floor.

02 — DIAGNOSIS FIRST

EVE Muse 3D + AI reads the lower-face outline

Three-dimensional imaging under five light sources shows the jaw from angles a mirror never offers, and it separates muscle bulk from the bone beneath it. Your director reads that next to palpating the angle while you clench. Both have to agree before a product is chosen, and where they disagree the injection waits.

03 — DIRECTOR-PERFORMED

Marks drawn on your clenching jaw

The working area is marked on your own anatomy with the muscle engaged, inside the safe envelope and away from the muscles that shape your smile, and the injections are performed by your director. Units follow how thick and how strong that muscle actually is, and the map is redrawn at every visit.

FAQ

Jawline slimming with toxin, asked and answered

Does the jaw bone itself get smaller?
No. Bone is untouched by an injection. What reduces is the chewing muscle sitting on the outside of the bone, and the outline of the lower face changes only as much as that muscle was contributing to it. If the assessment finds a wide mandible underneath, we say so at the diagnosis, because the money would buy a change nobody can see.
How can I tell whether my wide jaw is muscle?
Place two fingers on the angle of your jaw, just in front of the earlobe, and bite down hard. A block that rises and hardens under your fingers is masseter. Something that stays soft, or a hard edge that is there whether you clench or relax, points to fat or bone instead. Your director confirms it by hand and on the three-dimensional reading.
Will my face look sunken or gaunt afterwards?
That is the risk of taking too much muscle away, and it is managed by dosing conservatively at the first session and reviewing. A masseter carries part of the support for the lower cheek, so the aim is a softer outline with the structure intact. Where a face is already lean, the plan is lighter still, and sometimes the recommendation is to leave it alone.
How soon will the jawline look narrower?
Not on the day, and not in the first week. Reduced clenching force comes first, and the visible narrowing follows the slower loss of muscle bulk over the weeks after that. Individual timing varies with the dose and the muscle, so your director sets the expectation for your plan at consultation and checks it against your face at the review.
How long does the slimming last?
It is temporary in every case. The nerve signal recovers, the muscle returns to full strength, and bulk rebuilds if the chewing and clenching load that built it is unchanged. How long that takes differs between people, and a grinding habit shortens it, which is why the habit is discussed alongside the treatment instead of after it.
Will chewing feel different?
Often, mildly, for the first while. The muscle works with less force, so tough or chewy food can feel like more effort and softer meals are easier for a few days. Ordinary eating is not restricted. If chewing is still uncomfortable after the first week, call the clinic so your director can look at it.
How much is a session?
Square jaw treatment is listed at ₩40,000 (≈ $30) per session on the Korean tier and ₩350,000 (≈ $250) on the imported tier, both covering the muscle on both sides. The figure is the same for visitors and residents, and it is confirmed with you before anything is drawn. There is no course to commit to.
Does it help if I grind my teeth at night?
Reducing how hard the muscle can contract is what changes the bulk, and many patients with a grinding habit come in for the outline. The habit itself carries on, since the injection is placed in the muscle and not in what drives the clenching. Dental advice on a night guard sits alongside this treatment and your director will say so.
Can I combine it with another treatment on the same face?
Usually yes, and the combination is decided on the reading. A lower face that reads wide and short may need projection at the chin as well as a narrower angle; a jawline losing definition is a laxity question and belongs with a lifting treatment. Each element is quoted as its own line, and you approve the whole plan before treatment.
Do men have masseter treatment here?
Regularly. Male masseters are usually larger and stronger, so plans tend to carry more units, and the restraint matters more because a jaw that reads too narrow on a male face is a visible overshoot. The same reading and the same published rates apply.
Can I have it on the day I come in, and what if you say no?
Treatment can follow the consultation in the same visit once the cause is confirmed and you have approved the figure, and Dear Clinic is open 365 days a year. If the reading says the width is bone, fat or gland, we do not recommend the injection; you are shown the finding on your own scan and told which treatment would reach it instead.
