Do Lip Fillers Hurt and How Much Swelling Should You Expect? A Cheongdam walk-through

The mouth is a sensitive area and an injection there is felt. Anaesthetic arrangements are agreed with your director before the first entry point, and puffiness afterwards is ordinary. What this page will not do is put a number of days on your face.

The Direct Answer

What a lip filler appointment actually feels like at Dear Clinic

Yes, you feel it: lips carry dense sensation and a needle there registers. Discomfort is managed with anaesthetic arranged before the injection begins, and some hyaluronic acid gels arrive from the manufacturer already carrying lidocaine, which reduces what is felt during and after placement. Puffiness follows almost every lip appointment and then subsides.

Two honest limits belong at the top of this page. Pain is subjective, so nobody can promise you a particular sensation, and Dear Clinic does not publish a fixed recovery timetable for the mouth. Anyone who gives you an exact number of swollen days has stopped describing medicine and started describing a script.

What can be described is the sequence: how the area is prepared, what the injection itself involves, what swelling does over the following days, which reactions are ordinary, and the specific signs that mean you contact the clinic the same day. Every injection here is performed by your director, so the person answering that call already knows exactly where the gel went.

Comfort Measures

How discomfort is handled before a lip injection

Anaesthetic is not an afterthought on the mouth; it is part of the plan agreed at your consultation. Whether that means a topical preparation, a gel that already contains lidocaine, or both, is confirmed with the director before anything is opened.

The clinic's own product material is specific on one point: Juvederm is supplied with lidocaine in the syringe, so pain during and after placement is reduced by the gel itself. The clinic's own product photography also includes a Belotero carton supplied with lidocaine. For the remaining families, ask which presentation your plan uses, and the answer comes with the quote.

Technique carries the rest. Slow, low-pressure delivery in the layer the design calls for hurts less than fast deposition, and a two-layer build spreads the work across fewer painful moments than repeatedly pushing product into one pocket. Sensation also differs by zone: the vermillion border and the corners are typically sharper than the body of the lip.

Nothing on this page describes a pain-free procedure, and the word does not appear in any Dear Clinic protocol. The goal is a tolerable appointment with a design worth the twenty minutes of discomfort.

The Settling Window

How much swelling a lip design brings and how it behaves

Expect the mouth to look fuller than the design you approved, most visibly in the first day or two, then to reduce over the days that follow. The extent varies with how much gel was placed, where, and with how reactive your own tissue is; Dear Clinic publishes no fixed recovery timetable for it.
Lips swell more openly than most injected areas. The tissue is thin, mobile and richly supplied with blood, so the same volume shows more here than it would in a cheek. A mouth that looks overdone the first evening is usually swelling and not the shape that was placed.
Bruising is possible at any entry point. A small purple mark where a needle passed is ordinary and fades. If you bruise readily in general, plan the appointment with room ahead of anything photographed, and mention any blood-thinning medication or supplement at the consultation.
Asymmetry while swollen is not the final result. The two halves of a mouth rarely swell at identical rates, which is why judging balance early leads people to ask for corrections they do not need. Balance is assessed at the review appointment arranged with you.
Tenderness on pressure passes. Lips can feel firm or slightly sore to the touch while settling, and small palpable areas can smooth out as the gel integrates. Anything still palpable at your review is looked at directly.

For visitors: put a lip appointment early in a trip and never the night before a flight home, so the review falls inside your stay while the clinic is open across the weekend.

Aftercare

What to do with your mouth while the gel settles

Short, practical and worth following for the few days the area is finding its position.

Keep heat away. Saunas, hot yoga, heavy training and alcohol all drive blood into a mouth that is already fuller than usual, so park them for a few days.
Skip suction and very hot drinks. Straws, hot liquids and heavily spiced food work against lips that are still settling; ordinary eating and drinking are fine.
Leave the border alone. Pressing, pinching or massaging the outline to even it out yourself moves product that was placed deliberately. If something looks uneven, photograph it and bring it to the review.
Hold off on lip products. Lipstick, balm and any acid or exfoliating formula stay off the treated area for the short recovery window; your director will tell you when to restart them.
Come back for the review. The appointment exists so the design is read once swelling has gone, and so anything that needs a small correction gets one at the right moment. What it covers is confirmed at your consultation.
Ordinary Versus Urgent

Lip filler reactions that are expected — and the ones that need a same-day call

What you noticeHow to read itAction
Fullness beyond the agreed designSwelling response to injection in thin mobile tissue, most visible early onExpected — reassess at the review
Small bruise at an entry pointA vessel touched by the needle as it passedExpected — it fades
Tenderness or slight firmnessTissue responding to volume placed in two layersExpected — report anything persisting at the review
Pain that climbs instead of easingEscalating pain after injection is one of the warnings the vascular safety literature describesContact the clinic the same day
A pale or blanched patch, or dusky mottled discolouration spreading around the mouthPossible compromise of blood supply, which can progress to skin necrosis if leftContact the clinic immediately
Visual disturbance or eye painRare but documented after facial filler injection in the ophthalmology literatureSeek medical attention immediately
Spreading heat, redness or fever days laterPossible infection or inflammatory reactionContact the clinic the same day

Vascular events are uncommon and they are the reason lip injection is performed slowly, at low pressure, in planes mapped by the anatomical work listed at the foot of this page. Hyaluronic acid is also dissolvable with a hyaluronidase enzyme injection, which is part of why an HA gel is used here for the mouth.

The Dear Filler Technique

Four steps that decide how a lip settles afterwards

Comfort and recovery are largely set during the appointment, by how the material is distributed.

01
Dear Shape

Mark the mouth first so fewer passes are needed

Ratio, outline and the corners are read from the EVE Muse 3D scan under five light sources before any needle is prepared. A design decided in advance means fewer entry points and less time with an open syringe against sensitive tissue.

02
Dear LayerFill

Two layers spread the load instead of one deposit

A base layer holds the contour and a fine second layer refines the border. Distributed placement is gentler at the time and leaves less concentrated volume in any one spot, which is also what keeps a lump from forming as the area settles.

03
Dear BalanceControl

Symmetry judged during placement, before swelling arrives

Both halves are compared while the mouth is still readable. Getting that right in the chair is why an evening of uneven puffiness is usually nothing: the underlying build was already balanced when it went in.

04
Dear LineFit

The finish is checked in motion, then booked for review

The centre line, the angle of the corners and the way the lips meet while talking are checked before you leave, and the review appointment is arranged at the same visit so the settled result gets a second reading.

Published Rates

What the appointment costs, and what is quoted separately

Lips sit in the specialty-area group on the filler card: ₩300,000 (≈ $215) per cc with the house Korean gel and ₩500,000 (≈ $355) per cc with an imported family. Billing follows the cubic centimetre placed, and the total is agreed with you at the diagnosis.

Consultation and aftercare arrangements are explained at the visit, including what any review or follow-up involves — ask and you will be told before you commit. Published rates are identical for residents and for visiting patients. The dermal filler hub carries every area and family, and the transparent price list covers the rest of the clinic.

FAQ

Lip filler comfort and swelling, question by question

Do lip fillers hurt?
You feel them. Lips are densely supplied with sensory nerves, so an injection registers there more than it would in a cheek. Anaesthetic is arranged before the first entry point and some hyaluronic acid gels are supplied with lidocaine already mixed in, which lowers what is felt during and after placement. Most people describe a short, sharp sensation at each entry that eases quickly; nobody here will promise you a sensation you have not had yet.
What anaesthetic is used for lip filler here?
That is settled with the director at your consultation, because it depends on the gel your design calls for and on your own sensitivity. The clinic's product material states that Juvederm carries lidocaine in the syringe and reduces pain during and after the procedure; A Belotero carton supplied with lidocaine appears in the clinic's own product photography. Ask which presentation applies to your plan and the answer comes with the quote.
How much swelling is normal after lip filler?
Enough that the mouth looks fuller than the design you agreed, and most obvious in the first day or two before it reduces. How much varies with the volume placed, the layer it went into and how reactive your tissue is, so no fixed recovery timetable is published for it. Your director gives you the expectation that fits your plan, and the review appointment is where the settled shape is finally read.
Which part of the mouth is most sensitive during injection?
The vermillion border and the corners generally register more sharply than the body of the lip, which is where a design that has been marked in advance earns its keep. Working from a plan read off the 3D scan means fewer entry points and a shorter time with tissue open, and both of those do more for comfort than any single product choice.
Will I be able to go back to work or out to dinner the same evening?
Many people do, with the understanding that the mouth is visibly fuller and may be tender. Anything photographed, filmed or formally attended deserves a gap of several days so you are judged on the design and not on the settling. Plan around the swelling instead of planning around a promise that there will not be any.
Can I use ice, painkillers or arnica afterwards?
Ask at your appointment before taking anything. Cooling and medication are commonly discussed after injectables, but what is appropriate depends on your history, on what else you take and on how your mouth looks that day, so the instruction comes from your director rather than from a page. Anything blood-thinning should be raised at the consultation, before treatment rather than after it.
When should I contact the clinic urgently?
Call the same day if pain climbs instead of easing, if a pale or blanched patch appears, if dusky mottled discolouration spreads around the mouth, or if heat, spreading redness or fever develops days later. Seek medical attention immediately for any visual disturbance or eye pain. These are the vascular and ophthalmic warnings described in the literature at the foot of this page; they are uncommon, and they are the reason placement is slow and low-pressure.
My lips look uneven two days later. Should I be worried?
Usually not. The two halves of a mouth rarely swell at the same rate, and a design that was symmetrical in the chair can look lopsided while it is puffy. Photograph what you are seeing, leave the area alone, and bring it to the review so the director can read the actual result. Corrections requested while swelling is still present tend to be corrections of swelling.
Does bruising always happen, and how do I reduce the odds?
Not always, but a small bruise at an entry point is entirely possible because needles pass through tissue full of small vessels. Tell your director about any medication or supplement that thins the blood, allow a margin before events that matter, and resist rubbing the area. A bruise is a cosmetic nuisance that resolves, and it is unrelated to whether the design underneath is good.
If I dislike the result once the swelling goes, what happens?
The material is hyaluronic acid, so a hyaluronidase enzyme injection can reduce or clear it. That is assessed in person, and the clinic's guidance notes that gel which has been in place a long time and become fibrosed may need more than one session to clear fully. If what you want is more volume in an area the proportion of your face will not carry, we do not recommend adding it, and you will hear that at the review.
What does the appointment cost, and is the rate the same for visitors?
Lips are quoted in the specialty-area group: ₩300,000 (≈ $215) per cc with the house Korean gel, ₩500,000 (≈ $355) per cc with an imported family. The published card is the same for residents and for international patients, consultation is in English, and the total for your cc is approved before treatment starts.

The urgent-symptom table on this page is drawn from published anatomical and complication literature, not from clinic folklore. The papers below map the facial danger zones that govern where a gel may be placed, review the ophthalmic complications reported after aesthetic facial injection, set out the enzyme used to remove hyaluronic acid, and document why one filler product behaves differently from another in tissue.
