Is laser hair removal permanent?
No. The endpoint measured in the published trials is long-term reduction: a durable fall in density, coarseness and visibility across a treated field, assessed months after a course. Some follicles are destroyed and do not return. Others were dormant or only weakened, so occasional maintenance is part of the plan from the start.
What is actually destroyed, and what survives?
A follicle that absorbs enough heat is destroyed and does not regenerate. A follicle that absorbs less is weakened, and what it grows afterwards is finer and lighter. A follicle that was dormant on the day absorbed nothing at all, because it had too little pigment to be a target at that moment.
Why do some clinics advertise a permanent outcome?
Marketing language and clinical endpoints are different things. The measured endpoint in the literature is long-term reduction, and Korean medical advertising rules keep absolute claims off a clinic page here. Reduction is what your director will describe in the room, and it is what the reference list at the foot of this page supports.
How long does the reduction actually hold?
Long enough that most people stop thinking about the field, and the exact span varies with the zone, the hair and your own hormones. Published follow-up is measured in months after a course. Your director gives you a realistic expectation for your own field at diagnosis and checks it against the baseline scan at review.
Will the hair that returns look the same as before?
Usually not. Regrowth in a treated field tends to be thinner, lighter in colour and slower to appear, because the follicles producing it were weakened rather than left untouched. Many people find that the practical complaint, which was often ingrown bumps and razor irritation, has changed more than the hair count has.
How often would I need a maintenance visit?
Only when a field starts to read heavier to you, which for most zones is occasional. It is bought as a single listed visit instead of another block, so an underarm top-up is ₩30,000 (≈ $20) on the women’s grid. Nothing is scheduled automatically and nothing obliges you to return.
Can hormones undo a finished plan?
They can recruit new growth that the plan never treated. Pregnancy, menopause, thyroid disease and polycystic ovary syndrome all convert fine vellus hair into coarse pigmented hair in fields that were quiet before. Where that is the suspected driver we say at diagnosis that the goal is ongoing control, and we suggest the underlying condition be investigated.
Is the result more durable on darker or coarser hair?
Coarse, dark hair gives the beam the most pigment to absorb, so it takes the most energy per pulse and tends to show the largest fall in density. Fine or pale hair absorbs little, which is why we say plainly when a field is unlikely to hold a worthwhile reduction and do not recommend buying a plan against it.
Does a deeper skin tone change how durable the result is?
It changes which wavelength is used more than what the field ends up like. The 1064 nm Nd:YAG is absorbed far less by pigment sitting in the skin, so it reaches the follicle on deeper phototypes while the cooling burst protects the surface. Your tone is read on the scan and a test area precedes a full pass.
If it is not permanent, is it still worth the money?
That is your judgement to make with the real figures in front of you. What you are buying is a durable drop in density and coarseness, plus occasional visits to hold it, against a lifetime of shaving or waxing. The listed lines are printed for every zone so the arithmetic is yours to do before anything is booked.
What would make you refuse to treat a field at all?
Broken or infected skin on the day, freshly tanned skin where the safe setting cannot be reached, and a field of white, grey or very fine pale hair where the yield would not justify the cost. Tattooed areas are worked around. Any of those is said in the consultation room before a plan is written.
Can I start with one zone and decide later?
Yes, and it is the sensible way in. A single underarm pass is the cheapest listed line and it tells you how your own hair answers before a larger field is committed. Residents and visiting patients are quoted the same rate, and the clinic is open 365 days, so a follow-up date is rarely the obstacle.
