Onda vs Thermage in Gangnam, Seoul

Onda vs Thermage

Two different bands of energy aimed at two different layers. One is sold as a kilojoule budget and repeated; the other arrives as a sealed tip with its shots counted. Dear Clinic runs both, so the reading decides.

The Short Answer

Microwaves and monopolar RF are not the same argument

Onda uses Coolwaves™ from DEKA, microwave energy at 2.45 GHz, and its work is done in the subcutaneous layer where a soft pocket sits. Thermage FLX from Solta Medical is monopolar radiofrequency, heating the deep dermis broadly to tighten the skin envelope and refine its surface. Different layer, different problem, different unit of sale.

Both are director-performed here. The doctor who reads your scan sets the plan and holds the handpiece for every pass.

Because they do not target the same tissue, they are poor substitutes for each other. Heating a lean, firm-skinned face with microwaves gives the energy nothing to grip; asking radiofrequency to melt away a soft under-chin pocket asks it to work in a layer it does not reach. The question is therefore not which device is stronger. It is which layer your looseness lives in, and the EVE Muse 3D capture with its five-light-source reading is what answers that before either machine is booked.

Neither machine works at the depth a focused-ultrasound lift is aimed at, which is why a third answer exists and is sometimes the one you are given.

Dear, Knowhow

How the choice between microwave and RF is made in the room

Both platforms stand in the same building on the same written list, so the recommendation follows the tissue and nothing else.

01 — PINCH, THEN SCAN

Is it a pocket or is it an envelope?

A hands-on examination tells your director whether there is soft fullness that can be lifted between two fingers, and the EVE Muse capture shows how the skin over it behaves. Fullness plus slack points to Onda. Slack alone, with the surface crepey and the pocket absent, points to Thermage.

02 — THE RHYTHM YOU CAN KEEP

One tip on one visit, or kilojoules over several

A Thermage tip is a committed single visit at a high figure, repeated rarely. Onda units are smaller, bought one at a time and spread across visits. Where two plans would land in a similar place, the one you can realistically keep to is the better plan, and that is a conversation rather than a calculation.

03 — DIRECTOR-PERFORMED, EITHER WAY

The same hands run both handpieces

Stamping a 600-shot grid and pacing a cooled applicator over a jaw are different skills, and both are director-performed here. Nobody hands the harder one to a machine setting.

Pricing

What Onda and Thermage
are listed at in Cheongdam

Onda is billed by delivered energy: a facial session of 60 kJ is ₩500,000 (≈ $355). Thermage is billed by the sealed consumable: a 600-shot face tip is ₩1,900,000 (≈ $1,355), and the periorbital Eye tip is ₩2,200,000 (≈ $1,570) for 450 shots. One written list covers residents and visitors alike, with no foreigner surcharge.

Eye ThermageOne sealed 450-shot periorbital tip₩2,200,000 (≈ $1,570)

Rates as published in September 2026. The EVE Muse reading and the director consultation come first, and what your quote covers is itemised before either handpiece is switched on. Comparing the two numbers straight across is a mistake worth avoiding: one buys a repeatable block of energy, the other buys a committed consumable, and the comparison worth making sits between whole plans instead of between line items. Full figures sit on the price list, and the treatment pages are Onda lifting and Thermage FLX.

Caution

What each of these two leaves behind for a few days

After a Thermage tip: hours of warm, flushed skin, and cheek and brow that can feel sore under pressure for a day or two.
After an Onda session: mild pink at the surface and a treated zone that may feel firm, warm or faintly tender for several days.
Both ask for a short break from saunas, hot baths, heated workouts and alcohol while the treated layer works through the energy.
Neither breaks the surface, so there is no needle mark and no bruise to cover, and makeup goes back on the same evening.
Named on purpose, uncommon for both: a small burn or blister where heat concentrated in one spot, and for Onda a tender nodule under the skin. Radiofrequency can also leave a patch of numbness that takes weeks to fade. Any of those is a same-week phone call.
Both build slowly. Judging either one the next morning is the most common way to end up paying for a second session too early.

FAQ

Onda or Thermage, answered

What is the actual difference between Onda and Thermage?
The energy band and the layer it lands in. Onda delivers Coolwaves™ microwaves at 2.45 GHz and works in the subcutaneous layer, on a soft pocket with slack skin above it. Thermage FLX delivers monopolar radiofrequency into the deep dermis to tighten the envelope and refine its surface. Neither reaches the deep support layer a focused-ultrasound lift is aimed at.
Is Onda just a different kind of radiofrequency?
No. Microwaves sit in their own band, which is the single most common misreading of this treatment. It matters commercially as well as clinically: “energy-based contouring” covers several technologies that behave quite differently, so the frequency and the delivered energy are the two specifications worth writing down when you compare quotes.
Which one costs more at Dear Clinic?
A single Thermage FLX tip is ₩1,900,000 (≈ $1,355) against ₩500,000 (≈ $355) for a 60 kJ Onda session, so one session of Onda is the smaller figure. Over a plan the gap narrows, because Onda is repeated and a tip usually is not. Compare the two as plans.
Can I have both Onda and Thermage?
Some plans do use both, spaced apart rather than stacked into one visit, with the interval set at diagnosis so the tissue is not recovering from two kinds of heat at once. Each is billed at its own published unit. Whether your face benefits from the pair, or only from one, comes out of the reading.
I have a heavy double chin. Which one?
If the fullness is soft and can be lifted between two fingers, that is the shape of problem Onda was built for. If the chin reads as skin that has slackened over a jaw with little fullness under it, radiofrequency is the better instrument. A hands-on examination separates the two in about a minute, and the scan confirms it.
Which one is better for the eye area?
Thermage, without much argument. Eye Thermage runs on a dedicated 450-shot tip at ₩2,200,000 (≈ $1,570) with its own protocol for lid and under-eye skin. Onda has no published eye line here.
Which one hurts more?
They are unlike each other. Thermage is a repeated pulse of deep heat with a snap of pressure behind it, hundreds of times, with vibration and cooling taking the edge off; if it feels strong, the energy level can be lowered, and depending on the case sedation, gas anaesthesia or an injected painkiller may also be used — the director decides at the visit. Onda is a rising and falling warmth under a moving applicator, with the cooled plate keeping the surface comfortable; comfort measures are confirmed at consultation.
Which one has more downtime?
Neither asks for a day off. Thermage leaves a stronger flush for a few hours and soreness for a day or two; Onda leaves mild pink and a firm feel in the treated zone for several days. Nothing is broken at the surface either way.
Does either one work on the body?
Onda does, on a separate body line using the body applicator and a larger energy budget. There is no body line for Thermage on this clinic’s published list, so a request for body tightening is answered with Onda or with something else entirely, and the assessment says which.
How many sessions of each should I expect?
Thermage is normally one tip per visit with a long gap before the question is asked again. Onda is bought a session at a time, with the next one decided at review. Neither is pre-sold as a package here, so a plan that turns out to need less simply costs less.
Is there anyone you refuse for both?
Yes. Descent at the deep support layer is redirected to focused-ultrasound lifting, because heating the wrong layer twice wastes your money. A pacemaker or another implanted electronic device rules out monopolar radiofrequency outright. Active inflammation or broken skin inside the treatment zone postpones either session until it has healed. In each case the consultation ends by naming what would suit you instead.
I am visiting Korea. Can I be assessed and treated on the same day?
Usually. The reading and the consultation take the first part of the visit, and if the plan confirms a platform the session can follow immediately, though naming your dates in advance lets a Thermage tip be set aside under your name. Everyone reads the same published rates, weekends and public holidays are ordinary booking days across 365 days a year, and the form below is answered in English as soon as possible with no deposit taken.

Scientific Evidence

Peer-reviewed sources on both sides of this comparison

The two technologies do not have comparable literatures, and saying so is part of the comparison. Monopolar radiofrequency has been studied for two decades, including head to head against focused ultrasound. Microwave contouring is younger and its indexed record is small, which is one reason no outcome figures appear anywhere on this page.
